If you\u2019re searching for someone who has been arrested by immigration officers, this guide explains <strong>how to locate a detainee<\/strong>, what information you\u2019ll need, and how to protect their legal rights.\n<h5><strong>Why It\u2019s Hard to Locate Someone After an Immigration Arrest<\/strong><\/h5>\nAfter an immigration arrest, a person may be transferred <strong>between facilities<\/strong>, turned over to <strong>ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement)<\/strong>, or placed in <strong>short-term detention<\/strong>. These moves often happen without notice, leaving families confused and worried.\n<h4>Understanding the process is the first step in finding them.<\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Step 1: Use ICE\u2019s Online Detainee Locator System<\/strong><\/h5>\nThe first place to search is the <a href=\"https:\/\/locator.ice.gov\/odls\/homePage.do\">ICE Detainee Locator<\/a>. You can search in two ways:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Using the <strong>A-Number<\/strong> (starts with the letter \u201cA\u201d followed by 9 digits)<\/li>\n \t<li>Using the <strong>full name<\/strong> and <strong>country of birth<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong>Important:<\/strong> If the name was entered incorrectly by authorities, you may need to try several combinations (first and last names reversed, spelling variations, etc.).\n\n<strong>Note:<\/strong> Minors, survivors of certain crimes (T or U Visa), or recently detained individuals may not appear in the system right away.\n<h5><strong>Step 2: Contact your local ICE office<\/strong><\/h5>\nIf the person doesn\u2019t appear in the system, you can call or email the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/contact\/field-offices\">local ICE field office<\/a> in your area. These offices are known as <strong>Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO)<\/strong>.\n\n<strong>Tip:<\/strong> If you manage to speak with someone, write down the officer\u2019s name and keep a record of everything they share. If no one answers, try calling multiple times throughout the day.\n<h5><strong>Step 3: Check if they\u2019re in a federal prison<\/strong><\/h5>\nSince 2025, ICE has also been using <strong>federal prisons<\/strong> to detain individuals in immigration proceedings. You can search for your loved one using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bop.gov\/inmateloc\/\">BOP Inmate Locator<\/a>.\n\nIf they don\u2019t appear there, try calling the federal prison closest to where the person was arrested.\n<h5><strong>Step 4: Contact the consulate (with caution)<\/strong><\/h5>\nIn many cases, detained individuals have the right to contact the consulate of their home country.
