As the 2024 presidential elections approach in the United States, the political future remains uncertain. In recent months we have seen how several Republican states are proposing anti-immigrant laws that affect millions of people living undocumented.
Texas
Texas law, known as SB4, grants local police expanded powers to detain, question, and even arrest individuals suspected of being in the country illegally.
The legislation requires local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and allows officers to request immigration documents during routine traffic stops, casual encounters, or other everyday interactions.
Additionally, the law prohibits cities and counties from implementing policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities, which has led to criticism regarding its potential to encourage racial profiling and discrimination.
Iowa
In Iowa, a measure similar to Texas's was approved, which also grants additional powers to the police to deal with illegal immigration. Under this law, entering the state after having been previously denied entry to the United States would become an aggravated misdemeanor, or even a felony under certain circumstances, including an arrest for another crime.
Oklahoma
In Oklahoma, Republican House and Senate leaders have embraced the idea of an anti-immigration law similar to Texas's, although specific details regarding the exact measure they are considering are not provided. This suggests that the measure would likely include provisions granting expanded powers to law enforcement to address illegal immigration in the state.
New Hampshire:
In New Hampshire, a bill is being considered that would allow police to file trespassing charges against individuals suspected of entering illegally from Canada.
Tennessee
In Tennessee, a bill is being considered that would require state law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities if they encounter individuals who are in the country illegally. The proposal seeks to establish closer collaboration between state and federal law enforcement in the enforcement of immigration laws. This would mean that state police agencies would be required to inform federal immigration authorities about anyone they encounter in an irregular immigration status during the course of their regular police work.
Georgia
Georgia wants to force eligible cities and counties to seek agreements to carry out some immigration-related checks in jails, with the goal of collaborating with the federal government in the enforcement of immigration laws.
This comes after an incident on the University of Georgia campus, where a Venezuelan man was accused of killing a nursing student. Immigration authorities noted that the man had entered the United States illegally in 2022.

Florida
The Florida law passed increases penalties for migrants found in the country illegally if they are convicted of driving without a license or committing serious crimes. This implies that those migrants found guilty of driving without a license or committing certain serious crimes will face more severe sanctions if it is determined that they are in the country illegally.
