The immigrant population in the United States has reached an unprecedented 46.2 million foreign-born individuals, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) indicated this Monday.
The number of immigrants last November is the highest ever recorded in any government survey or census since 1850, highlighted CIS, a private non-profit center that advocates for immigration restrictions.
CIS analyzed the figures in November from the Census Bureau's Monthly Population Survey and used as the definition of «immigrant» all persons who are not US citizens at birth.
Births in the U.S. to immigrant sons and daughters are not added to the immigrant count, as they are citizens by birth.
«"In November 2020, immigrants accounted for 14.2 % of the population, the highest percentage in 111 years," the group said.
The proportion of immigrants in the population has tripled since 1970 and has almost doubled since 1990, the report added. «The number of immigrants in the country grew by 1.5 million between November 2020 and November of this year.».
Between February and September 2020, the number of immigrants had decreased by 1.2 million people as a result of restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but in just one month, from this past October to November, the total immigrant population increased by 470,000 people.
«"Hispanic immigrants numbered 924,000, or 61 % of the total increase since last November," added CIS.
Between November 2020 and November 2021, the states with the largest increases in the number of immigrants were Florida, with an increase of 615,000 people, California (451,000), and Arizona (173,000).
